However, yesterday I was looking at some photos of a delicious sounding cake that a friend sent to me, and I realised that it looked <em>very<\/em> much like a cake which used to be somewhat of a staple in my family&#8230; It&#8217;s a very versatile cake, and <em>stupidly<\/em> easy to make &#8211; here&#8217;s the recipe!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">_____________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Babka<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is a type of Polish Tea Cake \u2013 I think the \u201cauthentic\u201d Babka recipes use yeast, but this one doesn\u2019t, so it\u2019s not <em>really<\/em> a traditional Babka, and it&#8217;s not quite as \u201cchewy\u201d as an original Babka. But it <em><strong>is<\/strong><\/em> really yummy. This particular recipe was given to my mother by the mother of a friend of hers, who had escaped out of Poland as the Nazis were marching in. This cake is incredibly easy to make, and goes down well with everyone \u2013 there are lots of variations you can make, too!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">You will need<\/span>:<\/h3>\n<p>114 g (4 oz) of melted butter<br \/>\n1 and a \u00bd Cups of white granulated sugar<br \/>\n2 Cups of Self Raising Flour<br \/>\n3 eggs<br \/>\n\u00bd a Cup of milk<br \/>\n1 teaspoon of vanilla, lemon, or almond essence<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">And this is what you do<\/span>:<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mix ALL the ingredients except the flour in a Vitamizer or Blender, blend well, then add it to the sifted flour. Mix well with a wooden spoon. Place the mixture in a greased ring tin and bake in a 185\u00b0C (370\u00b0F) oven for about 30 minutes. Test with a skewer \u2013 if the skewer comes out clean, the cake is ready, however it may take 45 minutes or longer, depending on your oven. Invert onto a cake rack to cool, then put the cake onto a plate and dust with icing sugar.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Variations<\/span>:<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Only half fill the greased pan with the mixture. Place teaspoonfuls of (<span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em>dry!<\/em><\/span>) Nescafe, or (<span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em>dry!<\/em><\/span>)Cocoa powder and sugar<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span>, or Cinnamon and sugar, or chopped walnuts, or chopped mixed peel\u00a0 (<span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em>teaspoons of marmalade are really nice, too<\/em><\/span>) \u2013 or whatever you like (<span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em>within reason!<\/em><\/span>) evenly around the tin on top of the mixture. <em>Do<\/em> try not to get any of these dry mixtures on the sides of the tin, as it tends to make the cake stick to the tin when you\u2019re trying to turn it out! Carefully pour the rest of the mixture over your sprinkles and bake as above.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">To serve<\/span>:<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cut into generous slices and serve with coffee or tea as a special afternoon treat &#8211; or whenever you feel like a little something&#8230;.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Warning<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>!<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Do <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">not<\/span>, under <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">any<\/span> circumstances, use powdered Drinking Chocolate, unless you want a horrible cake with yukky lumps!
